Short and Sweet- “Strange sounds and personal reflection.”

Parents, do you miss that privacy that you had before you had children? You know, that distant memory in the back of your head where you could eat, read or even use the bathroom in quiet? I do.

Now don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t change what I have for a moment. However this past week my last place of solitude is now gone.

My bathroom.

I can relate^ http://thebestegbertfamily.blogspot.com/2011/02/my-escape.html?um=1

Yes, the last place during the day where I could read a World War Two book in peace. The Wonder Twins (I call them that because they tag team pretty much everything: empty the wipes, haul out the items from the oven drawer, etc) have now figured out that on the other side of their bedroom wall, is where I find some brief solitude.

Now as I sit I am usually harassed by the constant banging on the wall directly behind my toilet. Below is a video of Melissa walking in on Ava without her knowing. Take a look.

You’ll notice two things in that video. One: Ava has a very cute knock. Two: In the background you can hear a creepy voice, that sounds very similar to E.T mixed with an Orc from The Lord of the Rings. Click the video a second time and have a listen.

Yup, that was Isaac.

“Ooo chhaaa eee raaa tuuu cheeee.”

I guess I only make it worse when I actually reply.

“What is it?” I ask.

“Daddddddddddd….” Ava calls.

“Yessss…?”

“Daddddddd…”

“What is it Ava?”

“Ooo, wasss iss shueeess?”

“I don’t have any shoes.” I reply.

Rinse. Repeat. The conversation continues, same start, same ending.

My quite place no longer exists.

Reflection

With all that said, I have been thinking lately about time. How it goes by so fast and before you know it, special events, momentous milestones become memories.

Or maybe you’re a parent and your children are all grow up, and you miss those fingerprint stains on your windows.

Whenever Benaiah has a sleepover at his grandparents house(s), I walk past his room at night and I see the door open and the room empty, I get a strange feeling.

Yes it’s important to have alone time, but yet I also want my family around.

So today, I am thankful for the moments when my children sound like wild animals or strange aliens from Star Wars, even when I want some of that alone time.

There will come a day when it will just be myself and Melissa in our home, and honestly I don’t know how I feel about that. Most likely I’ll find that hard, however I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I hope you have a great day and tune in next week for another Short and Sweet.
